PHR Certification Requirements

A PHR certification is needed over and above a HR degree by candidates who want to strengthen their candidature and display their skills to improve their knowledge and expertise in the field of HR.

Minimum criteria to be met by all PHR applicants:

  • Candidates need to meet the mandatory requirements as documented by Human Resources Certification Institute (HRCI)
  • Candidates must pass the PHR entrance examination
  • Minimum work experience of 2 years in HR Management

PHR Examination Details:

Broadly six areas are given importance in the PHR Examination. They are:

  • Strategy
  • Human Resource planning and recruitment
  • Human Resource Development
  • Rewards and employee recognition
  • Labour union management
  • Dealing with HR risks

Timings of PHR Examination:

Winter examination duration: 1st Dec to 31st Jan

Spring examination duration: 1st May to 30th Jun

Other requirements:

  1. Candidates need to have theoretical and practical understanding and application of concepts in HR
  2. Candidates should possess logical reasoning and analytical skills
  3. PHR professionals should work under other senior HR professionals
  4. Necessarily possess HR experience for at least a couple of years
  5. Need to gather expertise and knowledge and display compliance with all HR policies and strategic implementation procedures

Further credentials:

  1. Candidates can opt for SPHR (senior professional in HR) examination upon completion of PHR examination. SPHR examination is the next highest level of course for HR professionals
  2. The highest stage is called GPHR (Global practitioner in HR) examination which can be taken to obtain worldwide recognition.
