Medical Lab tech Certification Requirements


Most of the states required certified medical lab technicians to carry out most of the duties designated to a professional and qualified medical laboratory technician. So the medical lab tech certification is helpful in those situations to screen out candidates and choose the best.

Minimum criteria to be met by all medical lab tech certification applicants:

  • Candidates who would like to obtain the medical lab tech certification should at least complete their associate or Bachelor’s degree in medical technician field.
  • Some of the subjects that can be pursued during graduation in medical technician are botany, zoology, chemistry, etc.
  • Candidates should be enrolled in full time Bachelor degree programs which is of minimum time duration of four years.

Other requirements:

  • Candidates should be interested in taking up medical cases in the laboratory and conducting trail and analysis.
  • Candidates who take up courses in computer studies, management, and administration can also build a strong foundation for a successful career as a medical lab technician.
  • The medical lab tech certification is issued by the Centre for Medicare Services and it requires candidates to be able to perform diagnosis on human ailments.
  • There are various institutes which can grant certification to become qualified medical lab tech certification. The American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification is one of the most popular ones.
  • To obtain certification from ASCP, candidates must definitely pass the examination conducted by the same institute.

Recertification:

Candidates can obtain recertification for medical lab tech certification after every 5 years.
